Am I? What would I do to survive? Would I beat my own father to death for the bread in his hand? I hope to God that none of us will ever have to find out the answers to these questions. And now I’m sitting in my cubicle, glancing at my neighbors and wondering if they’re capable of this kind of depravity. ![]() How could human beings do these things to each other?Īnd that, I believe, is why many modern humans will never really be able to comprehend the things that happen in this book. How could the German citizens near the train tracks throw bread into the prisoners’ cattle cars just to watch them murder each other for it? How could the SS officers that shot them if they stopped on the first day of their death march then shout encouragements to them the next? How did these same starving prisoners manage to run 20 kilometers in the freezing snow? How were the German girls that lived within smelling distance of Auschwitz able to pass love notes to the soldiers that marched their skeletal prisoners past? How did the SS working in the camps reach the point that they were physically and mentally able to toss live infants into flames? How did this happen? How did so many average human beings contribute to this? I’m sure that ‘Why?’ might seem the more obvious choice here but I couldn’t let myself wander down the rabbit warren that is that question. There’s this question I kept asking myself while reading. At one point I even demanded that he explain this… thing to me.įifteen years later, my second read of this book has impacted me just as much as the first. After all, he hadn’t prepared me for what I found in this book. Mostly I was angry at the world and at humanity as a whole but I unfairly turned some of that on my father. I remember getting really angry when I finished this. ![]() For what were my “problems” compared to those of this narrator? How “hard” was my life compared to what he endured? What millions of people similarly endured? I now understood my own insignificance in the grand scheme of things and suddenly the reality of the world was a crushing weight. I felt like a child, like a complete and utter fool. My parents wanted to spare me from what exactly that meant until they thought I was mature enough to be able to absorb it.Īnd for the first time in my life I was completely self-aware. I had only been told in the vaguest terms what had happened, that so many millions of people had been killed, that Hitler and his men had sought to exterminate the Jewish people. I watched documentaries about it with my father, the history nerd, listened to the few stories that my grandfathers would tell, but up until that point I had been intentionally sheltered from the horrors of the holocaust. Both of my grandfathers served in it and so my parents wanted to make sure that we understood the sacrifices they made, the things they saw. I got mad at my mom when she made me go to bed on time, I complained if I didn’t like what we were having for dinner and I argued about what I was and wasn’t allowed to watch on TV. My biggest concern was whether or not a boy named Jason liked me back. Before this book my world was sunshine and rainbows. I first read this in my eighth grade History class. But can we, the reader, even understand what happened there? Can modern men and women comprehend that cursed universe? ![]() The author, who is actually in the above picture, said it best in the forward “Only those who experienced Auschwitz know what it was.” I think we can all agree with that. What’s to like?”Ĭircuses were once the leading entertainment medium around the world, but they have largely fallen out of fashion in recent years. “You’ve got animals being tortured, you’ve got death-defying acts, and you’ve got clowns. “It’s funny, but I truly never liked the circus,” Burton said in a recent interview. Does it? Circuses Long History of Animal Abuse Vintage circus poster shows the long history of animal exploitation Now, with award-winning director Tim Burton behind the camera, the new Disney “Dumbo” remake is claiming it holds strong animal rights messages. Most recently, 2016’s hit animation “Moana” was criticized for depicting Polynesians as overweight and goofy by the portrayal of the inane character Maui (Dwayne Johnson) 1995’s “Pocahontas” was not only historically inaccurate to the disappointment of many, but it perpetuated negative stereotypes about Native American cultures (as did the studio’s 1953 “Peter Pan”) the Siamese cats in the “Lady and the Tramp” did the same about Asian stereotypes and in the original “Dumbo” (1941), one of the crow characters was named Jim Crow, the same name as the nation’s segregation laws, but was voiced by a white actor (Cliff Edwards). Through the years, though, the studio has seen its share of criticism on a number of other films and for far more serious issues than going wild with the budgets. (But despite its astronomical spend, it’s still the highest grossing film of all time, adjusted for inflation). The film was even dubbed “Walt Disney’s Folly” because of the production costs. In this case, is it promoting cruel circuses? Or is it taking a stand for animal rights?ĭisney movies are no strangers to controversy: When Walt and Roy Disney started on their first feature-length animation, 1937’s classic “Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs,” the studio was criticized for going far over budget (they fundraised for ten times the cost of their shorts and then went more than five times over that). Disney’s latest feature-length film, “Dumbo” brings with it a dose of good old-fashioned Disney controversy. Water and fire, much like earth and air, are also diametrically opposed along the axis-mundi. Flames flow upward and occupy the same space as air, and just like flames, the smoke created by fire rises up and away from earth and water. It consumes life, and it also pairs with air. Fire is the element of death and destruction. Paired with water is the fourth element: fire. ![]() Together, earth and water are always below us, or headed that way. Over time, this downward movement carves up the earth into mountains, valleys, canyons, and other topographic features. Water is the essence of life, and it pairs with earth, since it’s always flowing downward toward the surface. They are based on movement and dynamism, and they’re also diametrically opposed along the axis-mundi. Next, consider all the stuff that goes on in our physical environment. The two are diametrically opposed along the axis mundi, and their relationship is based on verticality. At it’s most basic, our existence depends on a surface to stand on and a place to move around in. Together, earth and air represent our physical environment. Air represents the sky, which is the place we humans seek to reach through verticality. Air is not beholden to gravity in the same way earth is it is essentially the anti-earth, and it occupies the space above the surface, as well as the space above our heads. The next element is air, which always exists above earth. Earth represents the surface world, which we humans exist on. It encompasses all solid matter, which is always pulled down towards the ground, like our bodies. This solid surface is earth, which is the first element. We’re constantly pulled down along the axis mundi, and we’re always standing on top of a solid surface of some kind. We stand upright on two legs, in a vertical stance. To begin with, consider the human body and the environment we exist in. They were trying to understand how our physical environment is composed, and they were theorizing it without modern technology. This is a grossly simplified explanation, of course, but it represents what the classical elements were trying to do. These elements combine together to form molecules, which are the building blocks of the physical world we inhabit. Today, we understand the world to be made up of atoms, and each type of atom represents an element. Verticality is common to every human being who has ever lived, and if we examine the four elements and pick apart the relationships between them, we’ll find verticality at the center of it all. One thing they did have in common was verticality. For the most part, these were independent cultures that mixed very little, yet each came to the same conclusion when theorizing on the makeup of our world. What made all these early cultures independently identify earth, air, water and fire as the building blocks of our world? We can find variations on the classical elements in Ancient Greece, Babylonia, Persia, Japan, China and India, among others. Collectively, these four elements are called the classical elements. One theory was common to nearly all early civilizations, and it identified four basic elements: earth, air, water and fire. Throughout history, our ancestors have created myriad different theories and ideas that attempted to explain this world and how it’s composed. We perceive our surroundings through our five senses, which are the only window we have into the world outside our bodies. Ever since humanity became self-aware, we’ve been trying to understand the world around us. ![]() Premiere Pro is a fantastic editing program, on its own or with the assistance of third-party plugins.
